June 27 & 28 New Puppy!

June 27, 2016

Wow, what an exciting last 2 days! Diane set out on her ride for Multiple Sclerosis June 27 south of Phoenix. It was a hot, hot, hot day!

We visited the WWII Memorial on the Gila Reservation.

Ira Hamilton Hayes (January 12, 1923 – January 24, 1955) was a Pima Native American and a United States Marine who was one of the six flag raisers immortalized in the iconic photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II.

It was a humbling experience.

We moved on down the road to find better riding conditions for Diane. I parked the RV and waited for her to pass me several times for B Roll shots. I filled her drink containers every tine she passed. After passing 3 times, Diane called and said, “come get me”. My heart began to race. I thought she had either gotten ill from the heat or crashed.

I turned the RV around and raced full speed about ¼ of a mile to find her out of breath with a little fuzzy creature in her arms. It was a puppy who was dehydrated and was having a heat stroke.

Diane was 30 miles into her 50 mile ride. She called the ride off to care for the dying puppy. I got Diane a 5 gallon bucket and some room temp. water. The puppy’s tongue was hanging out several inches and she was in shock.

Diane slowly gave her water and gently put water all over the puppies body.

Meanwhile, I was filming the entire rescue.

After about 8 minutes, Diane put the puppy in the 5 gallon bucket with some water.

We decided to take the puppy to a Vet. Our host Harriet has several Greyhound rescues. Two of the Greyhounds donate blood once a month, in which money is placed into an account at Harriet’s vet for future Vet care. Harriet used this money to pay for the puppy’s treatment which included removing 400 ticks, yes 400 ticks.

The first name that came to my mind was Phoenix.

In addition we were in a suburb of Phoenix.

Diane literally brought this puppy back to life.

Phoenix pretty much engulfed our lives yesterday. Diane did give an interview to a local network affiliate about Phoenix and the 50 Causes Ride.

Instead of tacking on 20 miles today for MS, Diane insisted on riding the full 50 miles for Multiple Sclerosis.

Phoenix became my co pilot and every once and a while wanted to see were his momma was on the bike.

After today’s ride, we moved east to Globe AZ. The ride through the Canyons was incredible. Copper is mined in this area. We are toughly 4000 feet above see level and the views are magnificent.

It has been a long evening, writing tomorrows Cause of the Day, filming, editing and uploading the video to Youtube.

It is 9:50 Mountain Time and I need to lay my sleepy head down so I can rise at 5am and help Diane spread awareness for Colorectal Cancer.

Peace and Love
